VW Group is finally achieving synergies between Audi and Lamborghini.
At the Detroit Motor Show next month, Audi will debut the R8 V10, the fastest production R8 yet. The R8 V10 will come with a 5.2 liter V10 engine producing 528 hp, the same as in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. This power plant has also previously appeared in the R8 LMS GT3 racer.
Unique to the R8 V10 are the LED headlights for the main and dipped beams, a first, and daytime running lights. A new rear diffuser creating more down force is also special to this model and twin oval tailpipes tag the rear of the V10, as opposed to the quad chrome exhaust of the V8 version.
The V10 also features magnetic ride dampers and comes with a choice of a six-speed manual or an R tronic semi-automatic gearbox.
The numbers: 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 196 mph or 315 km/h.
On the inside you get a Bang and Olufsen system, which, for the average reader, costs about as much as your current car is worth. There's a Nappa leather finish too.
The R8 V10 will cost 121,800 pounds in the UK (140,800 euros).

You can think of the new 2011 Audi A8 L as something of a road-bound Gulfstream jet for the jet set. No, the lengthy new Audi -- which is set to land in Beijing next week as a star of the 2010 Beijing auto show - won't go 500 mph, but this is one car that will no doubt fly on the interstate (especially with the W-12 underhood) and get you there in style and comfort while doing so.

The "L" of course stands for Long Wheel Base, and Audi means it. Both the wheelbase and the overall length of the stylish new A8 grow by 5.1 inches, nearly all of which presents itself in the rear seats. Not only is it larger than the new A8 (which is also bigger than the outgoing car), but it's also 2.9 inches longer in both wheelbase and overall length than the last A8 L, stretching 207.3 inches from bumper to bumper.

Audi naturally makes good use of all the extra space. While you could order two ordinary rear buckets, most hedge fund managers we know will sell a few extra shares and pop for the top-shelf power rear seats. When we say power, we mean power everything -- recline, headrest, cushion depth, fore and aft adjustment, heating and cooling, lumbar adjustment and even a massage system with four settings. The rear passenger side seat even gets an adjustable foot rest that flips down from the back of the front passenger seat, which can itself be adjusted from the rear seats to make more room. Most of us don't have recliners this nice in our living rooms.

While you're lounging in around, you'll be equally equipped for work or play. Order the optional center console and you'll get controls for the rear dual-zone climate control, Audi's MMI touch control system, an optional fold-out table and even an optional mini-fridge. Ante up for the Rear Seat Entertainment System and you'll get dual 10.2-inch screens on the front seat backs with controls on the center console as well. Said entertainment will of course be best enjoyed with the optional 1400-watt, 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. If movie and music playback doesn't keep you entertained, you can always connect to the internet using your cell phone connection.

If you're not in the mood to be entertained, simply sit back and enjoy the ride. Plush Valonea leather is everywhere -- punctuated by wood trim so extensive it can even be found on the grab handles. Settle in with the extra loose cushion Audi includes and let the air suspension soak up every imperfection in the road while you gaze out the optional panoramic sunroof. Unlike most sunroof setups, both panels can tilt and slide open.

The A8 L's luxury credentials are impeccable, then, but what of our earlier reference to the high-speed nature of jet travel? Audi again has you covered with a standard 367-horsepower 4.2-liter V-8. If you can wait a few more months, though, you'll be treated to the return of the wonderfully decadent W-12 engine. We got nervous when the W-12 variant and the V-10 powered S8 both disappeared in 2010, but the W is back with a vengeance sporting an extra 0.3 liters of displacement and direct injection. The result is jet-like thrust from the 500 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque on tap, a 50-horsepower improvement over the old W-12 and indeed the V-10 as well. Audi says this new beast will be quicker at the air, er, drag strip as well, hitting 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds onto its electronically limited 155-mph top speed (we're betting it'll go a lot faster than that if the limiter is removed). Even better, preliminary tests suggest the A8 L will get the equivalent of 19 mpg average in the European test cycle.

The W-12's thrust is delivered smoothly to the ground through Audi's eight-speed automatic transmission and its now legendary quattro all-wheel drive system. In normal driving, 60 percent of the power is diverted rearward, but in low-traction situations as much as 80 percent of the power can be sent to the rear wheels and as much as 60 percent of the power can be sent to the fronts. Pick up the optional sport differential and quattro will vector torque from left to right across the rear axle as your driver slings you up the windy road to your chalet (assuming you opted not to take the helicopter this time).

When it was first revealed, some were disappointed that the new A8's styling was a bit conservative, but in a time when inconspicuous wealth is the new vogue, it fits the bill quite nicely. A8 L owners will be slightly less inconspicuous, though, with extra chrome on the grille slats, lower fascia air intakes and mirrors, standard LED headlights, W-12 badges front and rear and special trapezoidal exhaust tips integrated into the rear fascia. Standard 15-spoke, 19-inch wheels house 15.75-inch front and 14-inch rear brakes and both 20- and 21-inch variations are available.

Following its debut at Beijing, the Audi A8 L will launch in October alongside the standard model, but at that time only with the 4.2-liter V-8 onboard. If you lust for W-12 glory, you'll have to wait until next spring. The next S8 is expected about a year after the launch of the W-12 and we hear the S8's mighty V-10 may be replaced by a smaller engine -- possibly the supercharged 4.0-liter V-8 we've been hearing whispers about. A hybrid model is also reportedly in the pipeline, but its timing is unclear so far. For now, we understand the A8 L W-12 will likely command a price similar to its predecessor, somewhere in the $130,000 range. Better start deciding which stock portfolio to raid.

Audi, as part of the Volkswagen Group, wasn't always known for their sports cars. Most Audis are sleek, stylish and fast, but they never really stacked up against legitimate sports cars like models from Ferrari and Porsche. All of this changed in 2006 with Audi's introduction of the R8 V10 road car.
The R8 V10 road car wasn't exactly a new design idea by Audi. In fact, the R8 was nearly a decade old by the time Audi decided it should be produced for basic road ownership. There were two models of Audi R8 built in 1999 for the 24-hour Le Mans, the R8R and R8C. There was also the Audi R8 racecar built in 2000, and there's an Audi R8 Le Mans Concept 12-cylinder diesel in the works.
Audi announced its plans to transform the R8 into a V10 road car in 2005 and had planned on it being available by 2007. The idea was to create something unique and original while not completely abandoning the R8 concept that made Audi's racecars so successful. The production went to one of Audi's subsidiaries, quattro GmbH.
The end result of quattro's involvement was a mid-sized, 2-seater sports coupe with a longitudinally-mounted mid-engine and the patented permanent four-wheel drive system. The R8 is said to be very similar to the Gallardo from Lamborghini, and the V10 engine it uses certainly earns it a top slot in the high performance category.
There have since been other versions of the R8, including the R8 Spider and a V8 version of the automobile. The original R8 V10 by Audi was available in most locations around the globe by the end of 2008, and the car is still in production today.
The similarities found between the R8 V10 and the Lamborghini Gallardo models are present for a reason - Audi AG owns Lamborghini. So they decided to use some of the same parts and design features, including the chassis, floorpan, transmission and the large, powerful engine.
Audi's R8 V10 is also unique in many aspects. The body's aluminum-composite construction is a newer material that provides the ultimate strength with a lighter weight than most other carbon materials. There's also a thorough safety feature on board, called the Bosch ESP 8.0 Electronic Stability Programme. This includes ABS, distribution, regulation, differential and airbag features.
For most car enthusiasts, Audi's R8 is just another in a long line of sleek-looking sports cars without the powerhouse V10 engine. The V10 is basically the same engine used in the super-fast Lamborghini, only with a few improvements.
Audi's R8 V10 uses a 5.2 liter FSI internal combustion engine. It can reach a top speed (electronically controlled) of 200 MPH and can reach 60 MPH in only 3.9 seconds. The V10 produces 516 horsepower and, overall, the R8 costs around $146,000 USD.

The Audi S5 is designed to be the epitome of the luxury sport coupe market, and for 2010 Audi has also added a cabriolet version. The S5 coupe is still available for 2010 with the previous year’s 4.2 liter V8 engine, which produces 354 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The new soft-top cabriolet has been introduced with an all-new supercharged 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine, which generates 333 horsepower and the same 325 lb-ft of torque.
There are a variety of transmissions available on the 2010 S5. The V8 coupe can be paired with the standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic with manual shift control (called Tiptronic by Audi). The convertible comes only with a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.
The V8 coupe can get from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds with a manual transmission, slowed to 5.1 seconds with the automatic. The V6 cabriolet also takes 5.1 seconds to get to 60, even with the extra weight.
The new V6 engine improves upon the fuel efficiency of its V8 brother. The coupe gets 14 mpg in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined with a manual transmission. The automatic transmission improves the efficiency slightly, to 16 city, 24 highway, and 19 combined. The new V6 cabriolet gets 17 city, 26 highway, and 20 combined. With a 16.6 gallon fuel tank, the S5 coupe has a range of 282 miles with a manual and 315 miles with an automatic. The cabriolet will go 332 miles between fill-ups.
In a segment where looks matter as much as performance, the elegant S5 stands out as one of the most attractive cars in its class. With a powerful engine to match its impeccable looks, the S5 is a serious contender in this market.
