A lot of us have been wondering what the 2011 Scion tC will look like. We here at The College Driver have posed the question many times to Toyota PR and they were tight-lipped on the car's details. Then Toyota introduces a revolutionary car (by Toyota standards) at the Tokyo Auto Show called the FT-86, that appears, from the outside, to be production ready. So the question remains what badge will the FT-86 Concept get when it reaches production within the next 18 months?


The Detroit Bureau, speculates that the car will be sold in the U.S. as a Scion, quite possibly as a replacement for the tC hatchback. If that is true, we expect the interior to get draped in gobs of gray plastic and silver paint. We would also expect the interior not to feature the LCD instrument panel and all the other high-tech accouterments.


The Detroit Bureau goes further to speculate, that the FT-86 would be sold in Japan as Toyota Celica since the name has a cult following. If sold in Japan, they believe the vehicle would go up market, and be packaged with features that are somewhere between the 2011 Scion tC and the FT-86 concept.


Either way, the Toyota FT-86 is one sweet ride and we hope that Toyota doesn't water-down the design too much as it makes its way from concept to reality. So I will leave this one open to you, should the FT-86 be sold as Toyota Celica, Scion tC or something else?

When it comes to environmental performance, new Prius’s achievements are not just about the fuel economy and clean running offered by its Toyota Hybrid Drive full hybrid powertrain. Toyota’s determination to reduce emissions and promote sustainability prompted it to research and develop the world’s first injection moulded material to be derived from plant matter.

This new Ecological Plastic is used throughout new Prius, and will be featured widely in Toyota’s new model ranges in the future. In the short term, Toyota’s aim is for Ecological Plastic to be used for up to 60 per cent of a car’s interior components.

There are two types of Ecological Plastic: one produced entirely from plant stuffs, and another manufactured from a combination of plant and petroleum-based materials. As plant matter makes up a percentage of both types, CO₂ emissions linked to Ecological Plastic throughout its lifecycle are around 20 per cent less than for conventional plastics.

This is because much of the CO₂ produced when the material is ultimately disposed of is offset by the amount of gas that was absorbed through photosynthesis when the plants used to make it were growing.

Ecological Plastic meets the heat and shock-resistance requirements for use in vehicle interiors, with different raw material combinations used to create the appropriate quality, strength and durability for different parts. The plant-derived materials used include polylactic acid, plant-derived polyester, kenaf fibre and polyol, which is derived from castor oil.

Ecological Plastic is used for foam and injection moulded parts in new Prius, including the seat cushions, scuff plates and deck trim.

Days after Japanese manufacturer Toyota announced quite a hefty increase in price for the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser, the carmaker comes back on the model in an attempt to soften the blow caused by the $1,110 hikin price: the 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams special edition.

Not the first Trail Teams edition of its kind, this special FJ Cruiser is surely the most technologically advanced. Packing the usual 4.0l V6 engine (260 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque) and a choice of a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic five-speed, the special FJ Cruiser brings more changes to the equipment levels than to the performances.

The SUV comes with some new technology related features, including new audio systems (with a JBL Premium) one standard iPod connectivity and XM Satellite Radio. For the special edition, the power side mirrors feature illumination markers, while the auto-dimming rear-view mirror comes equipped with a backup camera monitor.

The interior of the model comes in green fabric seat inserts and door trim. The Trail Teams edition comes with a "floating ball" type multi-information display, remote keyless entry, cruise control and a rear privacy glass.

The price for the special edition model has not yet been announced, but we do know how much the Japanese carmaker will ask for the regular models. The 2011 FJ, which also comes with Smart Stop technology, has a starting price of in between $25,090 (for the 2WD model) to $26,680 (for the 4WD model with automatic transmission). As said, those prices are over $1,000 higher than the prices asked for the previous model year.
